SUSAN MCFARLAND

SUSAN MCFARLAND

Susan McFarland earned her Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Toronto in 1979, and later completed her Master of Science in Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Alberta in 1995.

Susan obtained her Canadian Commercial Helicopter Pilot (instrument-rated Class I, Group IV) and Canadian Commercial Airplane Pilot (single engine land and sea) licenses. She flew helicopters, both VFR and IFR, commercially in Western Canada and Ontario from 1981 to 1987. Susan was endorsed on a number of piston, turbine-powered, and multi-engine helicopter types.

From 1987 to 1992, Susan worked for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada as an operational accident investigator, primarily investigating helicopter, airplane, and air traffic service incidents. Her responsibilities included surveying the incident scene by ground and aerial techniques, extensive research to determine accident cause and possible prevention, and liaising with law enforcement agencies.

In 1995, Susan joined AlphaMet Metallurgical & Welding Engineers, a division of Anderson Associates Consulting Engineers Inc., and became a principal with Anderson Associates in 2000. Her broad work background makes her a valuable addition to the AlphaMet/Anderson Associates’ team.

At AlphaMet/Anderson Associates, Susan is actively engaged in material failure analyses, corrosion analyses, establishing quality assurance procedures, welding engineering, industrial incident investigations, forensic engineering, aircraft accident investigations, and fire investigations.

Susan has appeared as an expert witness in the areas of metallurgy and failure analysis in the Court of Queen’s Bench in Alberta and in the Provincial Court of Alberta.
