Travis Hagglund

Mechanical Engineer

Mobile Equipment, & Structural Fires Investigation

Travis Hagglund graduated from the University of Alberta in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also has his Fourth Class Power Engineer’s certificate from SAIT, and attended a year of the Petrochemical Engineering Technologist program at NAIT, just previous to attending the U of A.

While attending university, Travis took summer employment in the oilfield doing plant and field operating for Imperial Oil at their Cynthia gas plant, and for Numac Energy at their Tangent gas plant and Otter oil battery. He also worked as a labourer doing wellhead tie-ins and plant piping installation for Pillar Construction near Red Earth, Alberta.

After graduation, Travis joined Ensign Drilling as a rig hand on a prototype coil tubing rig and a number of conventional rigs. Travis then transferred to Ensign’s Nisku office where he worked as an operations engineer designing safety and structural equipment for their feet of rigs.

In 2001, Travis joined Allan R. Nelson Engineering as a consulting engineer. He worked on new designs, repair designs, modifications, and certifications of: drilling rigs, service rigs, freestanding rigs, flush-by rigs, and a wide variety of surface drilling equipment. Travis also performed various engineering services on a wide variety of industrial equipment, including overhead and portable cranes and transport trailers. While working for Allan R. Nelson Engineering, Travis began to investigate accidents, failures, and fires as a forensic engineer. He became a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) and a Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator (CVFI) in 2005.

In 2006, Travis became the engineering manager for Alco Inc. Energy Services. He supervised a number of engineers, engineers-in-training, and technologists across three locations that worked on mining equipment, drilling rig handling equipment, and wellhead control equipment. Travis initiated a project to develop a database and automatic certification process for the repair of elevators, tongs, bails, and other drilling rig handling equipment.

In 2008, Travis started Korsa Engineering, where he focused on the investigation of fire and mechanical failure losses for the insurance and legal industries. He also engaged in the analysis, design, and drafting of structures for the oil and gas service industry. As part of the necessities of running a small business, Travis handled business development, marketing, client relations, document control, and accounting.

In mid 2010, Travis joined ProSolve Consulting Ltd. as the lead mechanical engineer. He led a group of engineers and technologists in the design of dangerous goods transport vehicles, pressure vessels, and other miscellaneous engineering projects. Travis handled client relations, proposal preparation, design basis memorandums, invoices, staff mentoring, and other duties as necessary.

Travis joined Anderson Associates Consulting Engineers Inc. in May 2014 as a consulting engineer, and was happy to accept a partnership with the company in fall 2014. He brings a diverse background and strong forensic skills to the company.

Travis has investigated many fires, such as vehicle, mobile equipment, and structural fires. He has also investigated explosions that have occurred in gas production buildings. As well as being a CFEI and CVFI through the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), he is also in the process of acquiring his FIT (Fire Investigation Technician) certification through the International Association of Fire Arson Investigators (IAAI). Travis is a member of NAFI, IAAI, and the Fire Investigation Association of Alberta (FIAA).

Travis has designed, certified, and investigated the failures of a wide variety of industrial and commercial equipment. This list includes all kinds of oil and gas well drilling and service equipment and structures, heavy trucks, transport trailers, process equipment, dangerous goods transport vehicles, cranes, forklifts, mobile lifts, fall protection equipment, and others. Over the years, Travis has conducted many investigations for Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) that have involved either serious injuries or fatalities to workers on the job. In November 2013, Travis was accepted as an expert witness in Alberta’s Provincial Court, where he testified concerning a fatality investigation he conducted for OH&S. In June 2015, Travis testified in Provincial Court during a public fatality inquiry concerning a stage collapse that he also investigated for OH&S.
